SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Senior Jocelyn Davis captured the B Flight singles consolation title to lead the Cal Poly women's tennis team's final-day efforts at the UC Santa Barbara-hosted Gaucho Classic on Sunday.
Davis, who swept both of her Saturday opponents to reach Sunday's finale, also whitewashed Loyola Marymount's Elisaveta Pironkovacs, 6-2, 6-2, to capture the championship.
"This tournament was a great starting point for our team. We've been implementing a different culture and a lot of different strategies this season and we finally had the chance to show it during a competition," first-year Mustang head coach Damon Coupe said. "I think we had many great things to take from this tournament. Jocelyn proved what a tough competitor she is. (Sophomore) Kathryn Webb proved she can play with the big hitters in the top flights. Through sheer discipline alone, (sophomore) Ane McPike can now beat players. (Sophomore) Gabrielle Gatewood won her first match of the season and is looking to continue on with the improvements she is making. One of the big surprises was the doubles tandem of Jocelyn and Kathryn. Due to an injury earlier in the week to (freshman) Ireen Kuipers, we paired the two together on Tuesday for the first time and they went in and dominated doubles. They put on a show with their new formations and tactics going 2-1 and almost knocking off UC Santa Barbara's top doubles team."
Cal Poly enjoys a 12-day hiatus before opening play at the Stanford-hosted ITA Northwest Regional Championships on Friday, Oct. 21.
