LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Cal Poly women's tennis program doubles pairing of junior Alexa Lee and sophomore Jennifer Cornea suffered their first collegiate defeat together on Sunday as the duo was eliminated from contention at ITA/Riviera All-American Championships during the pre-qualifying stage with an 8-4 defeat against Clemson's Monica Kochanova and Kiara Vsykocilova.
"Being that this was their first tournament playing together, Jen and Alexa realized that they can compete at high level," Cal Poly assistant coach Suzie Matzenauer said. "Our doubles play was 200 percent better than how we looked last season."
Lee and Cornea (above) advanced to Sunday's match by defeating Air Force's Melissa Cecil and Tahlia Smoke during Saturday's opening round. Also competing in the pre-qualifying singles draw, Lee was eliminated from contention on Saturday. All pre-qualifying matches were hosted by UCLA.
