PALO ALTO, Calif. – The Cal Poly doubles tandem of junior Alexa Lee and sophomore Jennifer Cornea enjoyed a second successful morning at the Stanford-hosted ITA Northwest Regional Championships as the duo advanced to the round of 16 with an 8-0 whitewash of San Jose State's Sandra L. Florea and Erica Medlin.
Lee and Cornea, individually eliminated from singles title contention on Friday, won their opening doubles match on Friday, downing Sacramento State's Katharina Knoebl and Sophie Lohscheidt, 8-3. Lee (above) and Cornea will face the second-seeded pairing of California's Jana Juricova and Zsofia Susanyi on Sunday at 9 a.m.
In other doubles action, senior Jocelyn Davis and sophomore Ane McPike – after drawing an opening-round bye on Friday – dropped their round of 32 match on Saturday morning against California's Tayler Davis and Cecilia Estlander, 8-2.
In singles action, Cal Poly rebounded in the 32-player consolation draw to post a sterling 5-0 mark. Lee brushed aside fellow Big West foe Nicole Eades of UC Davis, 6-0, 6-0, while Davis swept Elizabeth Ecker of Stanford, 6-1, 6-2. After dropping her opening set against Washington State's Andjela Kankaras, sophomore Gabrielle Gatewood bounced back to produce a 2-6, 6-3, 10-6 triumph. McPike also downed a Washington State foe in Anatasia Romantsova, 2-6, 6-3, 1-0. Cornea rounded off Cal Poly's singles efforts with a 6-1, 6-4 defeat of Fresno State's Olga Kirpicheva.
