CALIFORNIA WINTER INVITATIONAL DRAW AND RESULTS
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Starting the year at No. 44 in the Campbell's Intercollegiate Tennis Association team rankings, the Cal Poly women's tennis program opens its 2012 spring campaign when visiting the Hellman Tennis Center in Berkeley to participate in the Jan. 13-15 California Winter Invitational.
"This weekend's format is really beneficial to simulating a regular dual match," said first-year head coach Damon Coupe, who welcomed back six letterwinners from a 2011 squad that finished 16-7 overall, earned a share of the Big West Conference regular season title and advanced to the NCAA Championships. "The competition against No. 8 California, No. 41 Saint Mary's and No. 66 Fresno State will be very good and we expect very hard-fought matches. Having been unable to compete with all of our players at the same time during the fall, I'm looking forward to watching us compete as a team for the first time."
Highlighted by junior Alexa Lee's singles appearance and doubles participation with sophomore Jen Cornea during fall's ITA/Riviera All-American Championships, the Mustangs competed in four events during the fall season, but have been idle since Fresno State's Nov. 11-13 Bulldog Classic.
Following participation in the California Winter Invitational, Cal Poly contests its first dual match by hosting UC Santa Cruz on Mustang Courts on Friday, Jan. 27 at 2 p.m.
