No. 44 Women’s Tennis Rebounds in Doubles Play at Cal Winter Invitational

BERKELEY, Calif. – Despite being swept in singles play by No. 8 California during Friday's opening round at the California Winter Invitational, the No. 44 Cal Poly women's tennis program returned to capture two of three doubles matches against No. 41 Saint Mary's at the Hellman Tennis Center.

During the doubles portion of the split dual, sophomores Jen Cornea (above) and Gabby Gatewood produced an 8-6 win at No. 2 against the Saint Mary's pairing of Catherine Isip and Carla Lindlar before Mustang sophomores Katherine Webb and Ane McPike secured the point victory at No. 3 by downing Catherine Leduc and Anna Chkhikvishvili, 8-0. At No. 1, senior Jocelyn Davis and junior Alexa Lee dropped an 8-5 decision versus Jenny Julien and Jade Frampton.

In singles play, Lee fell at No. 1 against fifth-ranked Jana Juricova, 6-3, 6-4, before Cornea dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision at No. 2 against 21st-ranked Zsofi Susanyi. California, with six singles players ranked among the top 125 in Division I, then saw 32nd-ranked Tayler Davis defeat Gatewood at No. 3, 6-0, 6-1. At No. 4, Webb was downed by No. 74 Anett Schutting, 6-0, 6-1, before Davis fell at No. 5 versus 81st-ranked Annie Goransson, 6-0, 6-1. Mustang freshman Ireen Kuipers was swept at No. 6 by 64th-ranked Cecilia Estlander before McPike dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision at No. 7 against California's Alice Duranteau. In her first collegiate match, Mustang freshman Kristine Kouyoumjian fell at No. 8 against Stephany Chang, 6-2, 6-2.

"I was happy with how we competed in singles. It will always be tough against a team like California, but our players fought and battled hard for each point," first-year Mustang head coach Damon Coupe said. "In doubles, we made the opponent earn each point. I was happy with how we performed at No. 2 and 3. Our players stuck to their strategy and applied pressure to the opponents in pressure situations."

Action continues at the California Winter Invitational on Saturday morning.
