BERKELEY, Calif. – Highlighted by six victories in singles action, the 44th-ranked Cal Poly women's tennis program completed play at the California Winter Invitational on Sunday at the Hellman Tennis Center with a split dual against No. 66 Fresno State and No. 8 California.

Sophomore Jen Cornea opened Cal Poly's victorious singles efforts at No. 2 with a 6-3, 6-3 sweep of Fresno State's Melissa McQueen before the Mustangs began rolling in the bottom half of the draw. At No. 4, senior Jocelyn Davis rallied to down Bianca Modoc, 1-6, 6-0, 6-4, before sophomore Katherine Webb (above) topped Tanya Murtagh at No. 5, 6-1, 6-0. Sophomore Ane McPike prevailed at No. 6 against Laura Pola, 6-2, 6-3, before freshman Ireen Kuipers bested Anne Susdorf at No. 7, 6-3, 6-3. Fellow freshman Kristine Kouyoumjian capped Cal Poly's day by topping California's Catalina Visico at No. 8, 6-2, 6-2

Cal Poly's only singles losses occurred at No. 1, where junior Alexa Lee fell versus Fresno State's Marianne Jodoin, 6-3, 6-3, and at No. 3, with sophomore Gabby Gatewood suffering a 6-4, 6-2 setback against Olga Kirpicheva.

"I'm excited that we were able to finish on such a positive note; we played disciplined, hard tennis and showed a lot of grit," first-year head coach Damon Coupe said.

Against California in doubles, Cal Poly enjoyed its best effort at the top spot, where Lee and Davis battled Cessi Estlander and Jana Juricova before falling, 8-5. Gatewood and Cornea fell at No. 3 versus Anett Schutting and Annie Goransson, 8-2. Webb and McPike lost by the same score at No. 3 against Alice Duranteau and Tayler Davis.

"Overall, I'm pleased with how we competed during the tournament," added Coupe, whose Mustangs also faced No. 41 Saint Mary's during the three-day tournament. "We gained a lot of trust and reached our goal of competing hard against some programs that are around us in the ITA rankings."

Cal Poly returns to the central coast to contest its first dual match of the spring by hosting UC Santa Cruz on Mustang Courts on Friday, Jan. 27 at 2 p.m.
