POSTMATCH REACTION: DAMON COUPE

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The 44th-ranked Cal Poly women's tennis program completed its two-match, spring-opening home stand on Sunday afternoon by dropping just two sets against San Francisco in sweeping the Dons on Mustang Courts.

Cal Poly's top doubles pairing of senior Jocelyn Davis and junior Alexa Lee prevailed for the second time in 48 hours by topping San Francisco's Marina Nikolic and Yurie Hashiguchi at No. 1, 8-0. Mustang sophomores Gabrielle Gatewood and and Jen Cornea prevailed at No. 2 against Julia Wartenburger and Milica Hadzi Tanovic, 8-3, before Cal Poly sophomore Ane McPike and freshman Ireen Kuipers (above) dropped an 8-5 decision against Ali McMahon and Melinda Akerbrant, 8-5.

Cal Poly, 10-0 at home since the start of last season, saw Lee return in singles play to top Nikolic at No. 1, 6-4, 7-6. Cornea swept Wartenburger at No. 2, 6-1, 7-6, before Davis whitewashed Hadzi Tanovic at No. 3, 6-3, 6-1. Gatewood slid past Akerbrant at No. 4, 6-1, 6-4, before sophomore Kathryn Webb dropped Cal Poly's lone set at No. 5 against Hashiguchi, 6-7, 6-0, 1-0. McPike finalized Cal Poly's team sweep at No. 6 by hitting her way past McMahon, 7-5, 6-1.

"Today was a good battle for us. We knew that San Francisco was going to play us hard and we came out and competed tough the right away and stood our ground," said first-year head coach Damon Coupe, whose Mustangs opened their dual slate by sweeping UC Santa Cruz on Friday. "I'm proud that we earned the belief that we can compete and play hard when the going gets tough."

Cal Poly returns to the court when visiting Loyola Marymount on Friday, Feb. 3 (1:30 p.m.) and No. 26 Pepperdine on Feb. 4 (11 a.m.).
