Mustang Women’s Tennis Powers Past Cal State Fullerton, 6-1

FULLERTON, Calif. – The Cal Poly women's tennis team dropped just three sets on Saturday afternoon as the Mustangs earned their first Big West Conference road victory of 2012 with a 6-1 triumph at Cal State Fullerton.

The No. 1 Mustang doubles tandem of senior Jocelyn Davis and junior Alexa Lee opened Cal Poly's victory with an 8-6 triumph against Tiffany Mai and Morgan McIntosh. Mustang sophomores Ane McPike and Kathryn Webb prevailed by the same score at No. 2 against Kalika Slevcove and Monica Rodriguez before fellow sophomore Gabby Gatewood and freshman Ireen Kuipers capped Cal Poly's doubles sweep with an 8-1 victory at No. 3 versus Avriel Tomaiko and Jessica Pepa.

Cal Poly suffered its lone defeat on Saturday at No. 1 singles, where Lee dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision against Mai. Davis, however, returned at No. 2 to slide past McIntosh, 7-6, 6-1, before Webb posted a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3 against Rodriguez. Gatewood downed Slevcove at No. 4, 6-0, 6-2, before McPike swept past Pepa at No. 5, 6-1, 6-2. Kuipers (above) finalized Cal Poly's win at No. 6 with a 3-6, 7-5, 11-9 rally against Malorie Dela Cruz.

"We came out and played good tennis today," first-year Cal Poly head coach Damon Coupe said. "It's never easy to win on the road, but we came out and fought hard and with a disciplined with game plan."

Cal Poly (6-4, 2-1) caps a two-match road trip with an 11 a.m. bout at No. 54 UC Irvine on Sunday, March 4.
