Cal Poly Women’s Tennis Topped at No. 54 UC Irvine, 5-2

IRVINE, Calif. – Sophomores Jen Cornea and Kathryn Webb (above) produced victories at No. 3 and 4 singles, respectively, but the two decisions proved to be the Cal Poly tennis program's lone triumphs on Sunday as the Mustangs dropped a 5-2 result against No. 54 UC Irvine at Anteater Tennis Stadium.

The Mustangs (6-5, 2-2) were swept in the doubles point with senior Jocelyn Davis and junior Alexa Lee dropping an 8-1 decision at No. 1 versus UC Irvine's Hannah Holladay and Courtney Byron. Webb, along with sophomore Ane McPike, fell at No. 2 versus Kristina Smith and Franziska Goettsching, 8-3, before fellow Cal Poly sophomore Gabby Gatewood and freshman Ireen Kuipers were edged at No. 3 by Kat and Ali Facey, 8-7.

Smith returned for UC Irvine to top Lee at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-0, before Davis suffered a 6-4, 6-2 defeat at No. 2 against Byron. Cornea salvaged a victory at No. 3 by besting Goettsching, 6-3, 6-4, ahead of Webb's 7-6, 6-1 triumph at No. 4 against Kat Facey. UC Irvine's Stephanie Hammel, however, slid past Gatewood at No. 5, 6-4, 6-2, before Ali Facey rounded off the Anteater victory with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 6 against McPike.

Cal Poly returns to Mustang Courts to host No. 21 Texas Tech on Wednesday, March 7 and No. 51 Santa Clara on Sunday, March 11. Both matches get underway at 11 a.m.
