Mustang Women’s Tennis Looks to Rebound as Home Stand Comes to Close

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Three conference matches during a six-day span loom for the Cal Poly women's tennis program as the Mustangs look to improve their seeding for the April 26-29 Big West Championships and snap a three-match slide when completing a three-match home stand on Mustang Courts against UC Santa Barbara on Tuesday, April 10 (12 noon) and UC Riverside on Saturday, April 14 (11 a.m.). Cal Poly's busiest week of the spring closes with an 11 a.m. matchup at Cal State Northridge on Sunday, April 15.

Cal Poly (7-9, 2-3) slipped to sixth place in the Big West standings following a 6-1 April 6 defeat against No. 51 Long Beach State on Mustang Courts. The 49ers (12-5, 6-0) then defeated UC Santa Barbara (8-11, 3-1) the following afternoon to clinch the top seed for the Big West Championships at Indian Wells Tennis Gardens.

Despite the home loss against the 49ers, Cal Poly maintains an enviable record on Mustangs Courts. Cal Poly, which has finished among the top-three programs in the Big West standings during each of the last three seasons, has captured 15 of the program's previous 19 home matches dating to the 2010 campaign.

UC Santa Barbara enters Tuesday's match third in the Big West standings while UC Riverside (3-11, 0-5) – which hasn't won a conference match since 2009 – props up the conference standings once again. Cal State Northridge (10-7, 3-4), meanwhile, sits one match ahead of the Mustangs in fifth in the Big West standings.

Individually, sophomore Gabby Gatewood (above) remains Cal Poly's most productive player of late, having prevailed during three of her last four singles and doubles matches. After falling in both singles and doubles action during Cal Poly's 7-0 loss at No. 6 Stanford on April 4, Gatewood returned against Long Beach State to produce a pair of victories with her 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 triumph at No. 4 singles ranking as Cal Poly's lone win against the 49ers. Overall, Gatewood has won a team-leading nine singles matches and, with freshman Ireen Kuipers, owns a 5-2 doubles mark.

Looking ahead, Cal Poly completes its 2012 dual schedule when hosting No. 49 Fresno State on Saturday, April 21 at 11 a.m.
