Mustang Women’s Tennis Drops 2013 Home Opener to San Jose State

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Junior Jen Cornea (right) was a dual winner on Sunday afternoon, but after sweeping the doubles point from San Jose State, the Cal Poly women's tennis program captured just one singles match and dropped a 5-2 decision against the Spartans during the 2013 home opener on Mustang Courts.

Mustang junior Alexa Lee teamed with freshman Louise Oxnevad to open Cal Poly's day with an 8-7 victory at the No. 1 doubles position versus San Jose State's Klaudia Boczova and Erica Medlin. At No. 2, Cornea combined with junior Ane McPike to double up Sabi Leon Chao and Chau Truong, 8-4. The Mustangs completed the doubles sweep at No. 3 with juniors Kathryn Webb and Gabrielle Gatewood edging Juliana Bacelar and Jessica Willett, 8-7.

In singles action, Oxnevad was bested at the No. 1 position by Boczova before Cornea salvaged Cal Poly's lone singles victory at No. 2 by defeating Leon Chao, 6-3, 6-4. Truong returned at No. 3 to top Lee (6-0, 6-3) while Webb fell at No. 4 versus Medlin (6-3, 6-2). Gatewood rallied at No. 5 against Bacelar before dropping a 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 decision while Willett completed the Spartan victory at No. 6 by posting a 6-2, 7-6 decision against McPike.

Cal Poly (1-3) returns to the court when visiting Saint Mary's on Sunday, Feb. 10 at 11 a.m.
