Mustang Women’s Tennis Team Earns First Big West Victory

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Cal Poly women's tennis program dropped just three sets on Saturday afternoon en route to posting its first Big West Conference triumph of the 2013 season with a 6-1 win against Cal State Fullerton on Mustang Courts.  

Freshman Louise Oxnevad – who would eventually secure the match-clinching win at the No. 1 singles position – combined with junior Alexa Lee at the No. 1 doubles spot to post an 8-2 victory against Cal State Fullerton's Tiffany Mai and Monica Rodriguez. The Mustang junior tandem of Jen Cornea and Ane McPike dropped an 8-4 decision at the No. 2 position against Morgan McIntosh and Kalika Slevcove, but Cal Poly grabbed the doubles point at No. 3 as fellow juniors Gabrielle Gatewood and Kathryn Webb topped Megan Sandford and Emilia Borkowski, 9-8.

Oxnevad returned in singles action to defeat Mai, 6-1, 6-4, while Cornea bested McIntosh at No. 2, 6-3, 6-2. Lee swept past Rodriguez at No. 3, 6-4, 6-4, while Webb sidelined Borkowski at No. 4, 6-1, 6-0. McPike also posted a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 5 versus Slevcove. Cal Poly suffered its lone defeat of the day at No. 6 as Gatewood faltered versus Sandford, 6-0, 6-0.

Cal Poly (2-10, 1-4) concludes a three-match home stand against No. 72 Loyola Marymount on Sunday, March 10 at 11 a.m.
