Mustang Women’s Tennis Team Edged at No. 61 Fresno State, 4-3

FRESNO, Calif. – Senior Alexa Lee and junior Jen Cornea finished as dual winners on Saturday afternoon, but the Cal Poly women's tennis program – after capturing the doubles point versus No. 61 Fresno State – lost an eventual 4-3 decision to the Bulldogs at Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center.

Lee kickstarted Cal Poly's day by teaming with freshman Louise Oxnevad to post an 8-6 doubles triumph against Fresno State's Melissa McQueen and Rana Sherif Ahmed. The Mustangs then secured the doubles point at No. 2 as juniors Cornea and Ane McPike teamed to top Olga Kirpicheva and Bianca Modoc, 8-6. At No. 3 doubles, Mustang juniors Kathryn Webb and Gabrielle Gatewood dropped an 8-2 decision versus Aishwarya Agrawal and Sophie Watts.

Cornea returned in singles action to stroll past Agrawal at No. 2, 6-2, 6-4, while Lee recovered at No. 3 to post a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 triumph against McQueen. Oxnevad, however, fell at No. 1 against Ahmed (6-1, 4-6, 6-2) while Webb suffered a 6-0, 6-2 loss against Watts at No. 4. After winning her opening set versus Modoc at No. 5, McPike dropped a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 match. Fresno State finalized its win at No. 6 as Mustang freshman Anna Klavins was topped by Anneka Watts, 6-1, 6-1.

Cal Poly (3-12) wraps a two-match road trip when facing No. 42 Kansas State at Fresno State's Wathen Tennis Center on Sunday, March 17. Match time is set for 11 a.m.
