RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Juniors Jen Cornea and Gabrielle Gatewood (right) both prevailed in singles action and junior Ane McPike and freshman Louise Oxnevad rallied to win both of theirs as the Cal Poly women's tennis program closed its 2013 regular season with a 4-2 triumph against UC Riverside at Andulka Park.
Oxnevad kickstarted Cal Poly's Sunday at the No. 1 singles position by recovering from an opening-set defeat to slide past Jamie Raney, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1. Cornea continued Cal Poly's day at No. 2 by sweeping past Taylor Raney 6-2, 6-3 while McPike also returned from an opening-set defeat at No. 3 to best Kat Saltarelli, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. The Mustangs suffered defeat at No. 4 as junior Kathryn Webb was forced to retire after trailing Natalie McKay, 2-6, 6-2, 4-3. Gatewood, however, posted a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 5 against Courtney Pattugalan to secure victory for the Mustangs. At No. 6, Mustang freshman Haley Kepler dropped a 6-7, 6-4, 6-4 decision against Kate Bergeson.
Due to time constrains, the doubles portion of Sunday's match was not contested.
"I'm so proud of our team's effort today. There were some pure guts out there today by some players," second-year Mustang head coach Damon Coupe said. "I can't emphasize enough the attitude this team has shown throughout the adversity of the season."
Idle for nearly two weeks, Cal Poly next competes at the April 25-28 Big West Conference Championships at Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, Calif.
