MORAGA, Calif. – Highlighted by victories from senior Kathryn Webb (right) and freshman Sayaka Tsugai – who each advanced to the round of 16 in their respective singles brackets on Friday – the Cal Poly women's tennis program completed opening-day action at the Saint Mary's Invitational with mixed results.

In the White singles bracket, Webb advanced from the opening round of 32 players with a 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 triumph versus Santa Clara's Stephanie Skaras. Tsugai, in her first collegiate singles match, moved into the round of 16 in the Blue bracket by toppling Sacramento State's Andie Mouzes, 6-4, 6-2.

Webb and Tsugai, however, were the only Mustangs to prevail in singles action on Friday. In the Blue bracket, sophomore Haley Kepler and freshman Paula Kreider both slipped into the consolation competition after falling to, respectively, Sacramento State's Emily McColl (6-3, 6-2) and San Francisco's Milica Hadzi-Tanovic (6-2, 7-5).

In White bracket round of 32 action, Mustang senior Ane McPike dropped a 6-3, 6-4 decision against Sacramento State's Katharina Knoebl, junior Mika Padmanabhan fell against San Francisco's Marina Nikolic (6-3, 6-3), junior Bryn Bacharach was bested by Nicole Koehly of UC Davis (4-6, 6-2, 6-2) and freshman Emily Gibbens was topped by Pacific's Hana Ritterova (6-2, 6-3).

Cal Poly's doubles action was highlighted by Webb and Padmanabhan, who topped Pacific's Francis Dean and Regina Suarez (8-4) in the Blue bracket round of 16, and McPike and Gibbens, who bested Portland's Emily Gould and Saroop Dhatt in the White bracket, 8-7 (5). Both Mustang sides, however, were relegated to their respective consolation brackets with quarterfinal losses.

In other doubles action for Cal Poly, Kreider and fellow freshman Chanel Scudiero dropped a round of 16 Blue bracket match to Kammy Kecki and Samantha Martino of UC Davis, 8-2. Also relegated to the consolation bracket were Kepler and Tsugai, who fell against Santa Clara's Nikki Wolny and Stephanie Skaras, 8-4. Both Mustang teams were eliminated from competition after dropping their first matches in the consolation round.

In the White bracket, Cornea and Bacharach fell against Washington's Andjela Nemcevic and Julija Lukac in the round of 16, 8-4. They were then eliminated from competition with a consolation round loss.

Cal Poly resumes Saint Mary's Invitational action on Saturday, Oct. 12. Matches begin at 8:30 a.m.
