MORAGA, Calif. – Competing in their first collegiate tournaments, Mustang freshmen Emily Gibbens and Chanel Scudiero both captured singles titles as the Cal Poly women's tennis program completed play Sunday at the Saint Mary's Invitational.
Competing in the White bracket consolation phase, Gibbens topped Fresno State's Anne Susdorf (6-4, 6-0) in the semifinals before rolling past Liz Searl of of Saint Mary's (6-2, 6-0) in the championship final.
In the Blue bracket consolation round, Scudiero outlasted Kammy Kecki of UC Davis, 7-6(3), 6-3, before besting Gonzaga's Sissi Koehler for the division championship, 7-6(3), 6-0. In the other Blue bracket consolation match involving a Mustang, freshman Paula Kreider fell in the semifinals against Koehler, 6-0, 6-3.
Three other Mustangs competed in round robin singles matches as senior Kathryn Webb (right) fell against Gonzaga's Samantha Polayes (6-0, 6-1), junior Bryn Bacharach was topped by Fresno State's Anneka Watts (6-3, 6-1) and junior Mika Padmanabhan dropped a 7-6(4), 6-3 decision against Gonzaga's Katie Edwards.
In round robin doubles action, Mustang seniors Jen Cornea and Ane McPike fell against California's Cessi Estlander and Kelly Chui (8-2) while Bacharach and Gibbens dropped an 8-1 decision versus Portland's Katy Krauel and Marina Reimers.
Cal Poly continues its fall schedule at the Stanford-hosted ITA Northwest Regional Championships, scheduled for Oct. 19-24.
