Tsugai Leads Cal Poly on Day No. 2 of Saint Mary’s Invitational

MORAGA, Calif. – Freshman Sayaka Tsugai reached the quarterfinal round of her singles bracket at the Saint Mary's Invitational on Saturday afternoon to highlight the Cal Poly women's tennis team's second-day action at the event.

Tsugai, who advanced to the Blue bracket round of 16 with a Friday victory, moved on to Saturday's quarterfinal phase with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 win against Pacific's Cristina Saenz de Buruaga. Tsugai, however, was stopped in the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-1 loss against Washington's Angela Chen. 

In other singles matches, sophomore Haley Kepler and freshman Chanel Scudiero advanced to the Blue bracket consolation quarterfinals with wins against, respectively, Claire Meunier of UC Davis (6-1, 6-0) and Portland's Marina Reimers  (6-1, 6-1). Scudiero then advanced to the consolation semifinals alongside fellow freshman Paula Kreider – a 6-3, 6-0 winner against Samantha Martino of UC Davis – after ousting Sacramento State's Andie Mouzes, 6-1, 6-1. Kepler, meanwhile, dropped her quarterfinal match after retiring through injury against Kammy Kecki of UC Davis (5-5, ret.).

Sophomore Anna Klavins – after dropping a 7-6 (2) 7-6 (6) decision to Pacific's Regina Suarez in the Blue bracket round of 16 – was eliminated from competition with a 6-3, 6-0 consolation phase defeat against Santa Clara's Elaine Chesoni. 

In the Red bracket singles consolation portion, senior Jen Cornea (top) was eliminated with a 6-4, 7-5 loss against Audrey Leitz of Saint Mary's.
