PALO ALTO, Calif. – The doubles teams of seniors Jen Cornea and Ane McPike and junior Bryn Bacharach and freshman Emily Gibbens both moved into the round of 16 to the highlight the Cal Poly women's tennis program's efforts on Saturday at the Stanford-hosted ITA Northwest Regional Championships inside the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
After advancing into the round of 32 on Friday, Cornea and McPike (right) moved one phase further by besting Washington's Natalie Allen and Sarah Steele, 8-7(5). The duo will face eighth-seeded Denise Starr and Zsofia Susanyi of California on Sunday at 10 a.m.
In the top half of the doubles draw, Bacharach and Gibbens moved past Catherine Leduc and Liz Searl of Saint Mary's, 8-6. They will face the Stanford pair of Caroline Doyle and Krista Hardeback on Sunday at 10 a.m. in the round of 16.
Cal Poly's other doubles team that began Saturday in the round of 32 was senior Kathryn Webb and junior Mika Padmanabhan. They, however, were ousted from championship contention by Washington's Angela Chen and Brian Kemp, 8-7(4).
In singles action, Cornea opened Saturday as Cal Poly's lone remaining player in title contention, but was eliminated in the round of 32 by eighth-seeded Maegan Manasse of California, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
In singles consolation matches involving Cal Poly players eliminated from main draw contention, Webb moved into the round of 32 by topping Portland's Victoria Troesch, 3-6, 7-6, 1-0(1). Bacharach, the other remaining Mustang in the consolation bracket, was eliminated by Sacramento State's Deimante Bulatovaite, 6-3, 6-0.
