FRESNO, Calif. – A two-time singles winner on Friday, Mustang women's tennis freshman Chanel Scudiero advanced to the Fight F semifinals to highlight Cal Poly's efforts on the opening day of the Fresno State-hosted Bulldog Classic.
Scudiero defeated Fresno Pacific's Angelika Sabieka (6-3, 6-1) in her opening match before storming past Fresno State's Tanya Murtagh (6-1, 6-3) in the quarterfinal round. Also in the Flight F singles bracket, Mustang junior Bryn Bacharach advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-0 win against Fresno Pacific's Megan Lee. Bacharach, however, fell against Bety Flores of Idaho, 6-3, 6-3.
In other singles matches involving Mustangs, junior Mika Padmanabhan defeated Portland State's Megan Govi (6-1, 6-2) in Flight C&D round 1 play before falling against Idaho's Rita Bermudez in round 2 (6-2, 6-2). Also splitting her Flight C&D matches was senior Kathryn Webb (above), who dropped a 6-2, 7-6(5) opener against Idaho's Galina Bykova before topping Portland State's Marina Todd in round 2, 6-1, 6-0.
In Flight A&B play, Mustang senior Jen Cornea was bested by Oregon's Nicole Long, 0-6, 6-3, 6-3 before also falling in round 2 against Portland State's Dane Voster, 6-3, 6-2.
In Flight E round 1 and 2 action, senior Ane McPike dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision against Idaho's Belen Barcenilla and a 6-3, 7-6 match versus Fresno Pacific Alison Carre. Freshman Sayaka Tsugai also fell against Carre, 7-6, 6-1.
In doubles play, the Mustang tandem of Cornea and McPike moved into the quarterfinal phase of the Flight A bracket by edging Oregon's Allie Hueffner and Kadie Hueffner, 8-7. Bacharach and Padmanabhan, however, were topped in their round of 16 match by Fresno State's Rana Sherif Ahmed and Sophie Watts, 8-4.
In other doubles matches involving Cal Poly, sophomore Haley Kepler and Tsugai posted an 8-2 win against Oregon's Lena Macomson and Fresno City College's Maya Mammetgulyyeva in Flight B round 1. Also in the round, Mustang sophomore Anna Klavins and Scudiero dropped an 8-3 matchup against Idaho's Vicky Lozano and Alexa McDonald.
Action at the Bulldog Classic continues on Saturday at 9 a.m.
