BERKELEY, Calif. – The Cal Poly women's tennis team produced two doubles victories against No. 56 Fresno State to highlight the program's Saturday action at the California Winter Invitational.
Hosted by the eighth-ranked Golden Bears and a competition that comprises a round-robin format serving as a warmup for the dual match season, Cal Poly received doubles triumphs from senior Kathryn Webb and freshman Sayaka Tsugai (7-6 (5) against Fresno State's Anne Susdorf and Anneka Watts) and juniors Bryn Bacharach and Mika Padmanabhan (6-2 versus Sofya Malysheva and Tanya Murtagh).
In other doubles matches involving Mustangs, the senior tandem of Ane McPike and Jen Cornea fell against Aishwarya Agrawal and Claire Yang (6-4) while freshmen Emily Gibbens and Zoe Oedekerk were on the downside of the same scoreline against Rana Sherif Ahmed and Sophie Watts.
Cal Poly, however, was shutout by California in singles play with Cornea (7-6 (5), 6-1 versus Anett Schutting), McPike (6-0, 6-0 versus Klara Fabikova), Webb (6-0, 6-3 versus Lynn Chi), Bacharach (6-2, 6-0 versus Kelly Chui), Padmanabhan (6-1, 6-1 versus Zsofi Susanyi), Gibbens (6-4, 6-3 versus Denise Starr), Oedekerk (6-3, 6-1 versus Maegan Manasse) and Tsugai (6-2, 6-1 versus Alice Duranteau) all falling.
Cal Poly concludes California Winter Invitational action on Sunday versus the Golden Bears in doubles and Saint Mary's in doubles.
