Cal Poly Women’s Tennis Edged in Big West Opener

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Senior Jen Cornea (right) prevailed in singles and doubles play and junior Mika Padmanabhan was a 6-2, 6-2 winner in singles, but the Cal Poly women's tennis program – after capturing the doubles point – dropped a pair of three-set singles matches and ultimately its Big West Conference opener at Cal State Northridge on Saturday, 4-3.

Cornea helped kick off Cal Poly's doubles point victory at No. 1, teaming with fellow senior Ane McPike to top Criss Rodriguez and Vivian Lin, 8-2. At No. 2, Mustang junior Hannah Stone and freshman Emily Gibbens fell against Mickey Hsu and Kristen Poei, 8-1. Cal Poly, however, recovered at No. 3 with senior Kathryn Webb and freshman Sayaka Tsugai doubling up Jessica Warren and Lorraine Cheung, 8-4.

Back at the top spot in singles, Cornea rolled past Rodriguez, 6-1, 6-0. Gibbens, however, fell at No. 2 versus Lin (7-5, 7-6) while Stone dropped a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 decision at No. 3 against Hsu. Padmanabhan won her match at No. 4, but Webb was bested by Poei at No. 5 (6-3, 6-2) and Tsugai, after winning her first set at No. 6 against Cheung, was on the downside of a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 result.

Cal Poly (1-2, 0-1) continues its three-match road trip when facing Loyola Marymount on Sunday, Feb. 2 at 11 a.m.
