Mustangs Sweep UC Riverside to Earn First Big West Win

SAN LUIS OBISPO – The Cal Poly women's tennis team dropped just two sets on Sunday afternoon against UC Riverside as the Mustangs picked up their first Big West Conference victory of 2014 with a 7-0 sweep at Mustang Courts.

In doubles, Cal Poly rebounded from a loss at the No. 1 position by senior Jennifer Cornea and junior Hannah Stone against Jasmine Almaguer and Courtney Pattugalan (8-1) to win the remaining two matchups. At No. 2, Mustang senior Kathryn Webb (right) and junior Mika Padmanabhan partnered to storm past Tiffany Jue and Thanh Doan (8-2) while, at No. 3, senior Ane McPike and freshman Emily Gibbens swept Anna Tatyanich and Sophie El-Kara (8-0).

Cornea rebounded in singles to post a 6-2, 6-2 triumph at the No. 1 spot versus Almaguer while Gibbens survived an opening-set loss at No. 2 to best Pattugalan, 5-7, 6-2, 1-0. At No. 3, Padmanabhan rolled past Jue (6-0, 6-3) while Stone topped Doan at No. 4 (6-1, 6-2). McPike finished as one of four Mustangs with two victories after sliding past El-Kara at No. 5 (6-1, 6-3) while freshman Sayaka Tsugai closed Cal Poly's triumph by sweeping Ganesan at No. 6 (6-0, 6-0).

Cal Poly (4-9, 1-5) closes a seven-match home stand when hosting Blue-Green rival UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, April 12 at 2 p.m.
