BERKELEY – Highlighted by freshman Molly Reed, who prevailed in her first collegiate singles and doubles matches, the Cal Poly women's tennis program opened its 2014-15 season on Friday at the California Nike Fall Invitational.
In the Blue Singles bracket, sophomore Emily Gibbens (right) opened her year with a 6-4, 6-2 loss to BYU's Mayci Jones. In the consolation round, Gibbens also fell against San Jose State's Marie Klocker, 5-7, 7-5, 1-0 (10).
In the Gold Singles bracket, Reed prevailed in her first collegiate match, topping Santa Clara's Danielle Zinn, 6-0, 6-4. Reed, however, fell in the round of 16 to Kareena Mangi of Saint Mary's, 6-1, 6-3, and will continue play in the consolation phase on Saturday.
Also in the Gold portion of the competition, senior Hannah Stone rebounded from a second-set loss to top Sacramento State's Tori Trylovich, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. Stone, however, also fell in the round of 16 to Nevada's Sheila Smiley, 6-3, 6-2. Junior Dane Joubert, an offseason transfer from North Texas, dropped her first match as a Mustang, falling to BYU's Morgan Littlewood, 6-4, 6-2. In the consolation phase, Joubert rebounded to best San Francisco's Genevieve McCloskey, 6-2, 6-0. Both Stone and Joubert will continue play in the consolation phase on Saturday.
In the White Singles bracket, sophomore Sayaka Tsugai topped Sacramento State's Saskia Angerer to reach the quarterfinal round, 6-3, 6-2. In the top of the bracket, however, freshman Zoe Oedekerk fell in the round of 16 to Nevada's Monika Magusiak, 6-0, 6-1. Tsugai will continue action Saturday while Oedekerk will compete in the consolation round.
In doubles action, Stone and Joubert dropped their opening match in the Blue Bracket against California's Karla Popover and Klara Fabikova, 8-4. Stone and Joubert will continue action in the consolation round on Saturday.
In the Gold Bracket, Gibbens and Tsugai fell to Fresno State's Rana Sherif Ahmed and Tanya Murtagh, 8-4. Gibbens and Tsugai will continue action in the consolation round on Saturday.
In the White Bracket, Reed and Oedekerk captured their opening match against Nevada's Clarisse Treand and Magusiak, 8-2. Reed and Oedekerk will continue play Saturday in the quarterfinal round.
