BERKELEY – Highlighted by freshman Zoe Oedekerk's consolation singles championship, the Cal Poly women's tennis program completed its season-opening event on Sunday at the California Nike Fall Invitational.
Competing in the White Bracket singles consolation phase, Oedekerk reached the finals after Claire Meunier of UC Davis defaulted the semifinal matchup. Oedekerk then bested Sacramento State's Saskia Angerer to capture the title, 6-4, 6-3.
In the White Bracket main draw singles competition, Mustang sophomore Sayaka Tsugai was eliminated from title contention by San Jose State's Malin Cubucku, 6-0, 6-1.
Cal Poly's remaining players to reach a championship match were sophomore Emily Gibbens and Tsugai, who teamed in the Gold Bracket doubles competition, but dropped an 8-6 decision to Nevada's Juliette Legendre and Sheila Smiley in the consolation final.
Cal Poly continues fall action at the Stanford-hosted ITA Northwest Regional Championships beginning on Friday, Oct. 10.
