Joubert Leads Cal Poly on Opening Day of ITA Northwest Championships

STANFORD – Junior Danè Joubert finished as the Cal Poly women's tennis team's only dual winner on Friday at the Stanford-hosted ITA Northwest Regional Championships and sophomore Emily Gibbens and freshman Zoe Oedekerk won their doubles matchup as the Mustangs wrapped first-day action at Taube Family Tennis Stadium.

In the 124-player Open Singles bracket, Joubert began her tournament by besting Portland State's Marina Reimers, 6-1, 6-1. Joubert then moved into the round of 32 by topping Leilani Tice of UC Davis, 6-1, 6-0. Joubert will face third-seeded Zsofi Susanyi of California on Saturday at 10 a.m.

In other singles matches involving Cal Poly, senior Hannah Stone (right) fell to Pacific's Iveta Masarova (3-6, 6-2, 6-0); junior Bryn Bacharach dropped her match to Sacramento State's Alina Soltanici (6-3, 6-0); sophomore Sayaka Tsugai suffered a 6-0, 6-3 loss to Santa Clara's Nabila Farah and freshman Molly Reed dropped her opening decision to California's Denise Starr (6-2, 6-0). Additionally, Gibbens dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision versus ninth-seeded Klara Fabikova of California while Oedekerk, after winning her first set against Seattle's Madison Maloney, fell 2-6, 6-1, 6-3.

In the Open Doubles draw, Gibbens and Oedekerk rebounded to top Gonzaga's Alexandra Bourguignon and Samantha Polayes, 8-3. Gibbens and Oedekerk advanced to face Fresno State's Aishwarya Agrawal and Sofya Malysheva in the round of 32 on Saturday at 9 a.m.

Joubert, meanwhile, teamed with Stone to deal an 8-3 defeat to Washington's Sophia Bott and Capucine Gregoire. Joubert and Stone will meet Washington State's Donika Bashota and Victoria Matejevic on Saturday at 9 a.m.

In the remaining doubles match featuring Cal Poly, Tsugai and Reed fell to Fresno State's Rana Sherif Ahmed and Tanya Murtagh, 8-6.
