Mustangs Enjoy Mixed Results Friday at Two Tournaments

NORTHRIDGE/MORAGA, Calif. – Junior Bryn Bacharach finished as the Cal Poly women's tennis team's only dual winner on Friday as the Mustangs enjoyed mixed results competing at the CSUN-hosted Matador Invitational and Saint Mary's Invitational.

At the Matador Invitational and in the Black Singles Bracket, Bacharach moved into the quarterfinal round by topping Montana's Hannah Sulz, 6-2 6-3. Sister, Abby Bacharach, however, opened her day with a 6-0, 6-2 loss to Arizona's Laura Oldham while sophomore Sayaka Tsugui dropped a 6-1, 6-2 match to Portland's Saroop Dhatt.

In doubles and in the Black Bracket, Bryan and Abby Bacharach combined to defeat Loyola Marymount's Logan Finnell and Lisa Piller, 8-2. In the top half of the bracket, Tsugai partnered with Montana's Anabel Carbo to slide past UC Riverside's Sophie El-Kara and Courtney Pattugalan, 8-7 (3).

Cal Poly will continue action at the Matador Invitational on Saturday at 10 a.m.

At the Saint Mary's Invitational, sophomore Louise Oxnevad made her season debut in the Red Bracket round of 32, but dropped a 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 decision to Sacramento State's Daria Savchenko. In the other Red Bracket singles match involving Cal Poly, sophomore Emily Gibbens fell to Santa Clara's Delphin Rouvillois, 6-2, 6-4.

In the White Bracket round of 32, freshman Molly Reed dropped a 6-2, 7-6 (3) match Sacramento State's Ana Loaiza while senior Hannah Stone was topped by Freddie Sleiffer of UC Davis, 6-3, 6-1. In the bottom half of the bracket, junior Dane Joubert was bested by fifth-seeded Parminder Kaur (6-0, 6-3) while freshman Zoe Oedekerk was on the downside of a 6-2, 6-3 match versus Washington's Angela Chen.

In doubles action, Gibbens and Oedekerk combined as the third seed in Red Bracket, but fell to Pacific's Hana Ritterova and Iveta Masarova, 8-4. Gibbens and Oedekerk were then eliminated from the consolation phase by UC Santa Barbara's Jaimee Gilbertson and Natalie DaSilveira, 8-5. Joubert and Oxnevad also lost an 8-1 match to Kristy Jorgenson and Layla Sanders of UC Davis before being eliminated from contention in the consolation draw by Fresno State's Anne Susdorf and Anneka Watts, 8-4.

Also in doubles and in the White Bracket, Stone and Reed were edged by LaniRae Green and Tiffany Pham of UC Davis, 8-6. Stone sand Reed, however, rebounded in the consolation phase to top Pacific's Chrstiana Ferrari and Francis Dean, 8-7 (1).

Cal Poly will resume action at the Saint Mary's Invitational on Saturday at 8:30 a.m.
