NORTHRIDGE/MORAGA, Calif. – The Cal Poly women's tennis program captured three of five matches on Sunday afternoon to close action the CSUN-hosted Matador Invitational while five other Mustangs completed play at the Saint Mary's Invitational.
At the CSUN Invitational and in the Black Singles Bracket, sophomore Sayaka Tsugai – playing in the third-place match – finished her tournament with a 7-5, 6-3 loss to Cal State Northridge's Mari Taslagyan.
In other Black Bracket matches, junior Bryn Bacharach completed her tournament with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Seattle's Barbara Carey. Freshman Abby Bacharach then closed her tournament stretch by outdueling Montana's Hannah Sulz, 7-5, 7-6 (3).
In doubles action and in the Black Bracket, the Bacharachs rebounded from a Saturday defeat to best Seattle's Carey and Madison Maloney, 8-6. In the remaining doubles match involving a Mustang, Tsugai – competing with Montana's Anabel Carbo – fell to UC San Diego's Kyra Scott and Britta Mosser, 8-3.
At the Saint Mary's Invitational and in the White Singles Bracket, four different Mustangs saw their tournament runs come to an end in the consolation phase. After topping Santa Clara's Zeina El Tawil, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (4), senior Hannah Stone (top) fell to Tiffany Pham of UC Davis in the quarterfinals, 2-6, 6-1, 1-0 (4). Other Mustangs to falter in the round of 16 were freshman Molly Reed versus Pacific's Cristina Saenz De Buruaga (6-3, 7-5); junior Dane Joubert against Samantha Martino of UC Davis (6-4, 6-2) and freshman Zoe Oedekerk, who dropped her decision to Fresno State's Tanya Murtagh.
In a round robin singles match for players previously eliminated from any title contention, Mustang sophomore Emily Gibbens was on the downside of a 6-3, 6-0 decision to Pacific's Regina Suarez.
In doubles play and in the White Bracket, Stone and Reed fell in the consolation round semifinals to the fourth-seeded El Tawil and Delphin Rouvillois of Santa Clara, 8-7 (5).
In round robin doubles action, Gibbens and Oedekerk fell to California's Lyann Hoang and Stephanie Lin, 8-7 (6).
Cal Poly continues fall action at the Oct. 31-Nov. 2 Fresno State-hosted Bulldog Classic.
