BERKELEY, Calif. – Highlighted by a doubles victory from senior Hannah Stone (right) and freshman Zoe Oedekerk, the Cal Poly women's tennis program opened its 2015 spring schedule on Friday at the California Winter Invitational.
Hosted by seventh-ranked California at Hellman Tennis Courts and Channing Tennis Courts, Cal Poly opened its initial spring event by facing the Golden Bears in doubles. Stone and Oedekerk combined to produce Cal Poly's sole doubles victory by sliding past California's Karla Popovic and Stephane Lin, 7-6 (3).
In other doubles matches involving Cal Poly, the sophomore tandem of Louise Oxnevad and Emily Gibbens fell versus fourth-ranked Maegan Manasse and Denise Starr, 6-3, while Mustang junior Danè Joubert and freshman Molly Reed fell by the same score to No. 9 Klara Fabikova and Zsofi Susanyi. Mustang junior Bryn Bacharach and sophomore Sayaka Tsugai rounded off Cal Poly's doubles efforts with a 6-3 loss to Cecilia Estlander and Lyann Hoang.
Scheduled to face No. 46 Saint Mary's in singles afternoon action, Cal Poly saw a majority of its scheduled matches rained out. Cal Poly did manage one completed singles match as Mustang freshman Abigail Bacharach fell to California's Hoang, 6-3, 6-1.
Action at the California Winter Invitational will resume Saturday morning.
