LONG BEACH, Calif. – Zoe Oedekerk prevailed in singles action Saturday afternoon, but the freshman produced the Cal Poly women's tennis team's lone victory at No. 40 Long Beach State as the Mustangs fell to the 49ers at Rhodes Tennis Center, 6-1.
Oedekerk showed resilience after falling in the first set to Laura Eales, rallying for a 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 victory. The redshirt freshman improved to 8-6 overall in singles and remained undefeated (2-0) at the No. 6 position.
Long Beach State (6-0) grabbed the early advantage by sweeping doubles, as the Cal Poly duo of junior Danè Joubert and redshirt sophomore Louise Oxnevad lost 8-6 to Hayley Thompson and Ebba Unden at No. 3.
A week after winning both of her singles matches against San Jose State and Loyola Marymount, sophomore Emily Gibbens was ousted by the No. 99-ranked singles player in the nation, Maeva Razakasoa in straight sets at No. 1, 6-3, 6-4.
Sunday's match at UC Riverside has been postponed due to rain. No makeup date has been announced.
Cal Poly (1-6) returns home at 11 a.m. next Saturday, Feb. 28 to continue Big West Conference play hosting CSUN. Admission at Mustang Courts is free.
