Cal Poly Grabs First Conference Win, Breezes Past UC Riverside 4-0

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Cal Poly women's tennis team collected its first Big West Conference victory of the season by outdueling UC Riverside on the road Sunday afternoon. The match was a makeup due to a rainout on Feb. 22, as the Mustangs used four singles triumphs to earn their first road win of the season.

Cal Poly senior Hannah Stone (pictured) earned the match-clinching win over Caroline Hall in straight sets (6-2, 6-2) in the fourth position to send the Mustangs home victorious. It was the first victory of the season for Stone at No. 4 and the fifth of the season for the senior.

Cal Poly and UC Riverside played the match without the virtue of a doubles matchup, electing to play only singles to decide the winner.

Sophomore Emily Gibbens used a two-set decision (6-4, 6-0) over UCR's Courtney Pattugalan at No. 2, while Cal Poly redshirt freshman Zoe Oedekerk ousted Tamilla Vaksman in straight sets (6-1, 6-1). Gibbens won her sixth singles match in the second position this season and Oedekerk improved to 4-4 at No. 5 overall, securing her team-high 12th singles victory.

Cal Poly sophomore Sayaka Tsugai earner her third success in the sixth position with a two-set (6-2, 6-1) win over Kassie Truong.

Cal Poly redshirt sophomore Louise Oxnevad had her matchup at No. 1 against Chloe Pham halted as a result of the Mustang victory. In the third spot, Mustang freshman Molly Reed also watched her battle with Kalra Dulay ended prematurely after Cal Poly clinched.

Cal Poly will match up against UC Riverside for the second time in less than a week, as the Big West Conference Tournament in Indian Wells kicks off next Thursday. The start time for Thursday's matchup will be available early next week.
