PALO ALTO – The Cal Poly women's tennis team finished the ITA Northwest Regional Championships in Palo Alto Calif. with some solid wins, including in doubles play and newcomer Seriana Saltzen's two wins in singles play.
The tournament kicked off Friday morning with singles play, where senior Louise Oxnevad defeated Pacific's Cristina Saenz De Buruaga in the round of 128 6-4, 6-4. Oxnevad's win advanced her to the round of 64 where she took on ranked No.92 and seventh seeded Caroline Lampl from Stanford but fell 6-2, 6-1.
Junior Abby Bacharach, freshmen Saltzen, Claire Bouquet and Susanne Boyden, sophomores Celine Gruaz and Ilana Oleynik all put up a fight in the round of 128 put up a fight against all of their opponents but fell in the end.
Despite the losses in singles play, the Mustangs came back to dominate in doubles play on Friday.
The doubles tandem of Bacharach and Boyden pushed UC Davis' Kristina Breisacher and Isabella von Ebbe to a tiebreaker and came out with the win, 8-7(8) in the round of 64. Their win advanced them to the round of 32 where they fell to Saint Mary's Parminder Kaur and Emma Crister 8-1.
Bouquet and Oleynik also had a successful first round in doubles play, as they easily defeated Seattle's Kali McCollister and Barbara Carey 8-1, advancing them to the round of 32. The doubles tandem then took on Washington State's Barbora Michalkova and Guzal Yusupova but fell 8-1.
Oregon's Julia Eshet and Marlou Kluiving beat Gruaz and Saltzen 8-5. Saltzen then teamed up with Boyden to beat Saenz De Buruaga and Maayan Sela 8-6 in the consolation round on Sunday.
Newcomer Saltzen picked up her first two wins as a Mustang after she beat Saint Mary's Vanessa Nommensen in a three-set match 6-2, 3-6, 1-0(8) in the singles consolation. Slatzen then took on Washington State's Victoria Matejevic, also pushing her to a three-set match and winning 6-0, 6-7(3), 1-0(10).
After falling against ninth seeded and No. 105 Stacey Fung from Washington, Boyden came back to beat Gonzaga's Graciela Rosas 6-3, 4-6, 1-0(2) in the consolation round.
Bouquet put up a fight against Eastern Washington's Rachel Swindell, pushing her to three sets, but falling 7-5, 5-7, 1-0(4) in the consolation round.
The Mustangs will head to Northridge for the CSUN Fall Invitational in November to wrap up their fall campaign.
