Cal Poly Women's Tennis Concludes Cal Winter Invitational

BERKELEY – The Cal Poly women's tennis team had a strong showing at the Cal Winter Invitational this weekend, which included solid singles performance by two freshmen. 

"I like how the team competed this weekend. We had some close sets and matches and a few wins, but ultimately I like the way they played as a team" said head coach Katharina Winterhalter. "We will continue to work on some individual things as we get ready to start the dual match season in February." 

The Mustangs kicked off the weekend on Friday, where they went up against many ranked opponents from No. 8 Cal in singles play. Molly Reed fought hard against Maria Smith, forcing a tiebreaker but fell short, 6-2, 7-6(4). 

Louise Oxnevad fell to #49 Maegan Manasse 6-3, 6-0, while Susanne Boyden lost to #17 Karla Popovic 6-1, 6-1. Seriana Saltzen fell to Olivia Hauger 6-4, 6-2, Abby Bacharach fell to Maya Jansen 6-2, 6-0 and Celine Gruaz fell to Stephanie Lin 6-2, 6-0.  

The Mustangs finished off Friday with doubles play against Saint Mary's, where the doubles tandem of Reed and Boyden took on Jana McCord and Kareena Manji but fell 6-1, while Bacharach and Oxnevad fell to Danielle McIntyre and Emma Crister 6-2 and Gruaz and Saltzen fell to Kuar and Nommenson 6-0.  

After a hard fought day on Friday, the Mustangs turned things around on Saturday in singles play against Saint Mary's. Boyden took on Manji and defeated her 7-5, 6-3, while Saltzen easily defeated Crister 6-3, 6-2. 

Oxnevad put up a fight against McIntyre, but fell 7-5, 6-2, while Bacharach fell to Kaur 6-4, 6-4 and Gruaz fell to Nommenson 6-0, 6-3. 

The Mustangs took on Fresno State in doubles play, where Saltzen and Boyden lost to Juliane Triebe and Olivia Noble 6-4. Bacharach and Reed lost to #50 Georgia Lawson and Katrna Stloukalova 6-3 and Oxnevad and Gruaz lost to Abbey Watanabe and Galina Bykova 6-3.  

Cal Poly ended the weekend in singles play against Fresno State. Boyden kept her momentum going, as she came out with a win after pushing Stloukalova to a three set match, 1-6, 6-2, 7-6. 

Saltzen fought hard against Emma Wilson, pushing her to three sets, but lost 5-7, 7-5, 6-1. Oxnevad was down 6-4, 4-1 before her match was retired due to injury. Bacharach was defeated by Triebe 6-3, 6-4, while Gruaz was beat by Watanabe 6-1, 6-4.  

The Mustangs took on Cal in doubles play where the tandem of Saltzen and Boyden lost to Manasse and Jansen 6-1, while Bacharach and Reed lost to Nelson and Hauger 6-1. 

The Mustangs will be back on the court on Feb. 4 to take on San Diego State on the road in their first dual match of the season.
