Women’s Tennis Defeats Nevada to Win Home Opener

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Cal Poly sophomore Seriana Saltzen clinched the home-opening win for the Mustangs' women's tennis team by beating Nevada's Adriana Gergelyova 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2) at the No. 2 singles spot as the Mustangs picked up their first win of the season 4-3.

Saltzen's win gave Cal Poly (1-1) a 4-2 lead. Senior Molly Reed picked up the first singles win of the day, defeating the Wolfpack's (0-1) Anastaysha Gorbacheva 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 3 spot. Junior Caroline Williams picked up her first singles win of the season, beating Blaga Delic 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 4 spot.

In doubles, Williams and freshman Grace Olyphant clinched the point for the Mustangs by beating Lili Fekete and Maria Tatarnikova 7-6 (5). Earlier, freshman MacKenzie Worsnop and senior Abby Bacharach beat Adriana Gergelyova and Marta Ruedas 7-6 (11).

"Very proud of the team," head coach Kat Winterhalter said. "What a team effort it was today. They show up and keep working on the things we do in practice so that's what I'm proud of them for, they stick with the process."

The Mustangs got revenge against the Wolfpack after Nevada beat Cal Poly in a dual match last season 4-3.

"I think this win will give us some confidence," Winterhalter said. "Nevada's a good team, everybody battled in singles and doubles."

Cal Poly next plays San Francisco Sunday at 10 a.m. at Mustang Tennis Complex.
