Women’s Tennis Downs San Francisco For Second Win in a Row

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.— The Cal Poly women's tennis team won its second straight match Sunday, defeating San Francisco 5-2 to sweep its weekend home stand. Junior Caroline Williams clinched the victory for the Mustangs by defeating the Dons' Shanna Dos Santos 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 4 singles spot.

Cal Poly improved its record to 2-1 on the season while USF fell to 1-2. This is the Mustangs' first two-match win streak since 2015 when they beat UC Riverside in back-to-back matches.

"They're having a lot of fun out there, especially in doubles and that's great to see," head coach Kat Winterhalter said.

The Mustangs picked up the doubles point after senior Abby Bacharach and freshman MacKenzie Worsnop beat Anna Sokiran and Alexa Meyer 7-6 (1) at the No. 2 doubles spot. Williams and freshman Grace Olyphant won the Mustangs' other doubles match at the No. 3 spot, beating Dos Santos and Margarita Treyes 6-3.

In singles competition, Olyphant beat the Dons' Treyes 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 5 spot. Playing for the first time in a year because of an injury last season, sophomore Claire Bouquet won her first match of the season, making quick work of Alexa Meyer 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 6 spot.

Sophomore Seriana Saltzen added the icing on the cake for the Mustangs at the No. 2 spot, beating Anna Sokiran 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 to give the Mustangs a 5-2 victory.

"This team has had to battle for a long time and they're coming out on top and they've earned it so this is just going to give them more confidence," Winterhalter said.

Cal Poly goes on the road next weekend to face Fresno State on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 10 a.m. and CSUN on Sunday, Feb. 11 at 11 a.m.
