Cal Poly Women’s Tennis Blanks UC Riverside 7-0 for First Conference Win

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's tennis team picked up an impressive 7-0 sweep over UC Riverside on Sunday afternoon while supporting cancer awareness at Mustang Tennis Courts.

The Mustangs (5-11, 1-4) came with added pink to their uniforms to support cancer awareness and to support sophomore Susanne Boyden's mom, Pam Boyden, who is fighting cancer. Along with the team, many fans showed up in pink to support the cause.

Cal Poly jumped out to strong start to begin doubles play. Senior Abby Bacharach and freshman MacKenzie Worsnop began the day by blanking the Highlanders (4-16, 0-6) Tia Elpusan and Sara Khattab 6-0. Boyden and senior Molly Reed followed that up by beating Natalie Penner and Tracy Van 6-2 to clinch the doubles point for the Mustangs. Reed and Boyden are now a perfect 3-0 as a duo this season.

Cal Poly kept the strong play going in singles as junior Caroline Williams got the Mustangs their second point of the day by beating Lauren Wolfe 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 5 spot. Sophomore Claire Bouquet won her match closely thereafter at the No. 6 spot in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. Worsnop would later clinch the victory for Cal Poly after defeating Karla Dulay 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 1 spot.

Boyden won her second match of the season at the No. 2 spot in straight sets over Elpusan 6-3, 6-4. Reed also won her match in straight sets at the No. 3 position over Khattab 6-2, 7-5. She is now a team-best 7-3 this season. Freshman Grace Olyphant wrapped up the 7-0 win at the No. 4 spot by beating Chloe Pham 7-5, 6-4.

The Mustangs are now 4-3 at home. They hit the road next weekend for two conference matches, taking on Cal State Fullerton on Saturday and UC Irvine on Sunday. Both matches start at 11 a.m. Cal Poly will then return home for its final home match of the season April 21 at 1:30 p.m. against UCSB.
