Mustangs Women’s Tennis Loses Hard Fought Battle with UCSB

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's tennis played a hard fought match on senior day against UC Santa Barbara but fell 4-0 Saturday at Mustang Tennis Courts.

The Mustangs (6-13, 2-6) honored seniors Molly Reed and Abigail Bacharach (pictured above) following the match in front of family, friends and fans.

Doubles started out with the Gauchos (10-13, 6-2) taking the first point at the No. 1 position. Cal Poly's No. 3 duo of freshman Grace Olyphant and junior Caroline Williams played a close match but fell 6-4, which gave UCSB the doubles point. The No. 2 pair of Reed and sophomore Susanne Boyden held a 5-4 lead at the time the Gauchos won the doubles point. They finish the regular season with a record of 5-0 in doubles.

In singles, UCSB took a 2-0 lead after a win at the No. 2 spot. They would follow that up with wins at the Nos. 1 and 6 positions to clinch the win 4-0.

At the time the match was ended, Cal Poly held leads in two of the other three matches. Reed was up 3-1 in the third set, and Boyden held a 4-3 advantage in the second set after winning the first. Olyphant's match was called in the second set after she had won the first.

The Mustangs now get ready to head to Indian Wells, Calif. to compete in the Big West Conference Tournament that will take place April 26-29 at Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
