Cal Poly Women’s Tennis Drops Season Opener 4-3 Saturday

SAN JOSE, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's tennis team battled tough Saturday but fell in its dual season opener to Sonoma State 4-3 on the campus of San Jose State.

Sonoma State won the doubles point after wins at the one and three positions.

In singles, junior Claire Bouquet got things started for the Mustangs after a 6-0, 6-1 win at the No. 6 spot. After the Seawolves won their match at the No. 4 slot, sophomore MacKenzie Worsnop (pictured) won her match in straight sets at the No. 5 position to tie the score at 2-2.

After Sonoma State took the lead with a win at the No. 3 spot, junior Emily Louie-Meadors won her match at the No. 2 spot in three sets 6-2, 3-6, 6-0 to tie it at 3-3. It all came down to the No. 1 position, which went three sets.

Freshman Kimberley Bhunu won the first set 7-5 before the Seawolves' Jensyn Warren won the second set 6-3. Despite a strong effort from Bhunu in the third, Warren came out on top, winning the set 6-4.

Cal Poly will look for its first win Sunday when it takes on San Jose State at 12 p.m.
