LONG BEACH, Calif. — Junior Susanne Boyden and sophomore Grace Olyphant (pictured) won their fifth straight doubles match as a pairing but it was not enough as the Cal Poly women's tennis team fell on the road to Long Beach State 6-1 Saturday.
The Mustangs (3-6, 0-2 BWC) got off to a good start, winning the doubles point. After the 49ers (7-1, 3-0 BWC) won at No. 2 doubles, Boyden and Olyphant won their match at No. 3 doubles 7-5. The win improved their record to 5-0 this season. Cal Poly's No. 1 duo of junior Emily Louie-Meadors and freshman Emily Ackerman then secured the doubles point after a 7-6 (4) win. They are now 2-0 this season since becoming a doubles pair.
In singles, the Mustangs battled hard; pushing two matches to three matches. At No. 4 singles, Ackerman forced a deciding third set by winning the second set against Zara Lennon, but fell in the third.
Senior Caroline Williams also went three sets at No. 5 singles, winning the first set 6-4 before narrowly dropping the second and third 4-6, 5-7.
The 49ers went on to win the rest of the singles matches in straight sets for the 6-1 victory.
