Boyden, Ackerman Pick Up Singles Wins in 5-2 Cal Poly Loss at Hawai'i

HONOLULU — Susanne Boyden and Emily Ackerman earned singles wins for the Cal Poly women's tennis program on Saturday at Hawai'i, but the Rainbow Wahine, led by top-100-ranked Petra Melounova, prevailed 5-2 for a Big West victory at UH Tennis Complex on O'ahu.

Hawai'i tallied the doubles point with a 6-1 win on Court No. 3 followed by a 6-3 victory on the No. 2 court. Then after moving to singles, Melounova (11-4), the ITA's 100th-ranked player in the country (moving up 19 spots in the latest national poll), topped Emily Louie-Meadors 6-1, 6-2 to provide a 2-0 advantage.

Nikola Dolakova then gave the Wahine (5-9, 3-2) a 3-0 lead on the third court, topping MacKenzie Worsnop 6-1, 6-4, before Michelle Pits clinched the team outcome on the fourth court, 6-2, 6-2 against Grace Olyphant.

Boyden, a junior out of Raleigh, N.C., got the Mustangs on the board at No. 2 singles, as she beat Maayan Sela 6-4, 6-4. With her third-straight victory, Boyden improved to 7-2 this spring — including a 5-2 mark at her current position in the lineup.

Caroline Williams almost made it two-in-a-row for Cal Poly, but was just edged in a marathon matchup with Roxanne Resma, 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (13-11). Ackerman, a freshman from Thousand Oaks, defeated Alzbeta Houbova 6-3, 1-6, 7-5 in the day's finale, securing her fourth dual victory in her debut collegiate season.

Cal Poly (6-8, 2-3), which had come into the day winning three of its last four, will head out on the road next, visiting Fresno State at 1:30 p.m. Friday. The Mustangs then resume conference play hosting Cal State Fullerton at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, April 13, continuing the homestand welcoming UC Irvine for an 11 a.m. first serve Sunday, April 14.
