Cal Poly Volleyball Set to Open Season at BYU Invitational

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Cal Poly volleyball team will make its debut of the 2016 season this weekend at the BYU Invitational in Provo, Utah, as the Mustangs will take on Rice, Utah Valley and No. 13 BYU. 
 
The Mustangs ended their 2015 campaign with an overall record of 19-8 while going 11-5 in the Big West Conference. 
 
Ranking third in the 2016 Big West Preseason Poll, Cal Poly's 2016 squad brings new and veteran talent to the court, as there are nine returners and six incoming freshmen.
 
Taylor Nelson enters her junior year with 1,933 career assists, ranking her No. 7 in program history. Her sophomore season, Nelson was selected as an invitee to the 2016 USA College National Team.
 
Coming into her junior season, Raeann Greisen has compiled a career total of 680 kills, while senior Taylor Gruenewald has compiled a career total of 185 blocks.
 
Big West Freshman of the Year winner, Adlee Van Winden led the team in kills, as she compiled 391 her first year as a Mustang.
 
The Mustangs will open their season on Friday, Aug. 26 at 2 p.m. PDT against Rice. They will pick back up on Saturday, Aug. 27 to take on Utah Valley at 9 a.m. and No. 13 BYU at 6 p.m.
 
This will be the first time since 2010 that the Mustangs have met with BYU. In their most recent match against the Cougars, Cal Poly won 3-2 to make an overall record of 6-10 since first playing BYU in 1983. The Mustangs won their only previous matchup with Rice in 1992, while the Wolverines lead their all-time series 1-2.
