Mustang Volleyball Heads to UC Irvine and UC Davis

SAN LUIS OBISPO – The Cal Poly volleyball team hits the road to take on UC Irvine on Thursday and UC Davis on Saturday.

After the Mustangs' recent loss against UC Santa Barbara, they are now 13-8 overall and 6-4 in the conference, putting them third in the Big West.

Despite the loss, the team still leads the conference in overall assists with 1047 (13.42 average per set) and overall and conference kills with 1101 (14.12) and 509 (14.54).

The Mustangs dropped to the second spot in conference assists with 478 (13.66) and hold the No. 3 spot in overall and conference hitting percentage with.244 and .243 respectively. 

Junior Taylor Nelson is eighth in the nation in assists, according to recent NCAA rankings and also leads the Big West in overall and conference assists with 900 (11.54) and 417 (11.91). 

Nelson's contribution of 900 assists has given the team a total tally of 1047 and has landed Cal Poly in the No. 12 spot in the nation in assists. 

Only three Mustangs boast over 200 kills this season, including sophomore Adlee Van Winden, and junior Raeann Greisen who both rank in the Big West for overall and conference kills.  

Van Winden sits at the No. 4 and No. 5 spots with 282(3.62) overall kills and 133 (3.80) conference kills.  Junior Raeann Greisen is sixth in overall kills with 278 (3.56) and third in conference kills with 148 (4.23).

Sophomore Alexis Clewis has 208 overall kills and 80 in conference play.

Senior Taylor Gruenewald sits at the No. 4 spot in the conference for overall hitting percentage with .357.

The Mustangs have compiled 1138 digs so far this season, 321 of those coming from sophomore Katherine Brouker, who is third in conference digs. 

Freshman Jessica McRoskey is second in the Big West for conference service aces with 14 (.40). 

The Mustangs are meeting with Irvine for the second time this season. In their last match, the Mustangs swept the Anteaters at home 3-0, giving Cal Poly its 43rd win over Irvine since 1979. 

This will be the first time Cal Poly meets with Davis this season. Since their first meeting in 2004, the Mustangs trail the Aggies 11-12 and have not beaten them since 2013. 

The Mustangs will take the court on Thursday Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. to take on UC Irvine, which will be aired on ESPN 3. 

Cal Poly will be back at it on Saturday Nov. 5 to take on UC Davis at 7 p.m.
