Cal Poly Volleyball Ranked No. 24 in Preseason AVCA Coaches Poll

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — For the first time since 2008, the Cal Poly volleyball is ranked in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Preseason Top 25 Poll. The Mustangs begin the season ranked No. 24 in the nation.

The last time Cal Poly was ranked in the Preseason Top 25 was in 2008 when they began the season ranked tenth.

After going 27-3 last year, the Mustangs ended the season ranked No. 22 in the final AVCA Top 25 Poll. At one point during the season they were ranked as high as No. 21.

In last year's AVCA Preseason Poll they were in the 'others receiving votes' category before breaking into the Top 25 October 9.

A few of Cal Poly's 2018 opponents cracked the Top 25. UCLA, who Cal Poly will play at Mott Athletics Center September sixth and seventh, is ranked 11th. The Bruins beat the Mustangs in the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season.

Pittsburgh, who the Mustangs play August 24, are ranked No. 20. Wichita State, who is in the 'others receiving votes' category, will face Cal Poly September 15. Cal Poly beat the Shockers in five sets last season.

Hawai'i is also in the 'others receiving votes' category and is the only other Big West school mentioned. They will take on Cal Poly October sixth at Mott and October 26 in Honolulu.

Cal Poly opens its season August 24 against Pepperdine in Pittsburgh, Penn. for the Panther Challenge. The next AVCA Top 25 Poll will be released August 27 following the first weekend of play.
