No. 14 Mustangs Sweep Mississippi State to Open North Texas Challenge

DENTON, TX — Junior outside hitter Torrey Van Winden had a match-high 17 kills to help lead the Cal Poly volleyball team to a sweep over Mississippi State (25-10, 25-20, 25-23) in its first match at the North Texas Invitational. The win extends the No. 14 Mustangs' (8-1) winning streak to seven matches.

The win was a true team effort as nine players had at least one kill. Torrey Van Winden hit .364 and also added three blocks. Senior Adlee Van Vinden added nine kills and seven digs while hitting .368. Freshman setter Avalon DeNecochea dished out a match-high 30 assists while also adding six digs, three kills, three service aces and two blocks.

As a team, Cal Poly had eight service aces, seven blocks and hit. 292 while holding the Bulldogs (4-8) to a .037 hitting percentage, the lowest a team has hit against the Mustangs all season.

Cal Poly got out to a strong set to begin the match. Up 3-2, the Mustangs went on an 8-1 run to take an 11-4 lead. That run was capped off with three straight aces from junior Mika Dickson. They stayed hot from there, eventually extending the lead to 20-7 at one point. Cal Poly ended the set on a 4-0 run to win 25-10 and cap off one of its best sets of the season. As a team, the Mustangs hit .400 and seven players had at least one kill.

The second set started out much closer than the first. Down 9-8, Cal Poly scored six straight points to take a 14-9 lead. They then extended the lead to 19-13. Mississippi State rallied to cut it to 20-17 but the Mustangs did not let it get any close than three. Up 23-20, back-to-back kills by junior Jessica McRoskey finished off the set for Cal Poly 25-20. Torrey Van Winden finished the second set with eight kills.

The Bulldogs started the third set by getting out to a 5-1 lead. The Mustangs then rallied back to tie it at eight. With Cal Poly up 15-14, Mississippi State scored four straight points to take an 18-15 lead. The Mustangs responded with a 4-1 run to tie it at 19. Tied at 21, Cal Poly scored three straight points to take a 24-21 lead. The Bulldogs rallied to cut it to 24-23 but Torrey Van Winden's 17th kill of the match won it 25-23.

Cal Poly will wrap up the North Texas Challenge Saturday with two matches. They will first take on Wichita State at 11 a.m. PT followed by the host Mean Green at 5 p.m. PT. Live stats for both matches are available on GoPoly.com.
