No. 15 Mustangs Sweep Fullerton, Extend Win Streak to 11 Matches

FULLERTON, Calif. – Junior outside hitter Torrey Van Winden had a match-high 17 kills, hitting .500 to go along with eight dig to lead the Cal Poly volleyball team to its 11th straight win and a 3-0 (25-19, 25-10, 25-11) sweep over Cal State Fullerton Friday night.

Freshman Meredith Phillips posted six kills and senior Adlee Van Winden added five kills for Cal Poly. Freshman setter Avalon DeNecochea dished out 27 assists while senior libero Katherine Brouker finished with a match-high 16 digs.

It was a back-and-forth first set early on. Down 3-4, the Mustangs (12-1, 2-0 BWC) scored four straight points to take a 7-4 lead and force a Fullerton timeout. The Titans (6-8, 0-2 BWC) then rallied back to tie it at 8. The teams traded points from there until, tied at 13, Cal State Fullerton scored four unanswered to take a 17-13 lead. The Mustangs then got red-hot, going on an 11-2 run to win the set 25-19. Torrey Van Winden had eight kills while hitting .538.

Cal Poly stayed hot to begin the second set, getting out to a 10-3 lead. The Mustangs then extended their lead to 14-4.  They did not look back from there, eventually taking a 23-9 lead and went on to win the set 25-10. Cal Poly held the Titans to a -.097 hitting percentage in the set, the lowest it has held an opponent in any set this season.

The Mustangs didn't let up in the third set. They began the set by getting out to a 10-5 lead. Cal State Fullerton rallied back to get it at close as 11-9, but they did not get any closer than that. From there, the Mustangs went on a 14-2 run to close the set and win 25-11 to finish the sweep. For the set, the Mustangs hit .583 while holding the Titans to .037.

Cal Poly travels to UC Riverside Saturday for a match with the Highlanders at 7 p.m.
