No. 15 Mustangs Sweep Highlanders for 12th Straight Win

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Junior Torrey Van Winden had a match-high 11 kills and seven digs, senior Adlee Van Winden and junior Jessica McRoskey each had eight kills, and senior libero Katherine Brouker had a match-high 18 digs as the Cal Poly volleyball team swept UC Riverside Saturday to earn its 12th straight win.

The No. 15 Mustangs (13-1, 3-0) totaled nine blocks on the night and held the Highlanders (5-9, 0-3 BWC) to a .068 hitting percentage for the match.

The teams traded points in the early stages of the first set. Up 13-12, Cal Poly went on a 5-2 run to take an 18-14 lead. UC Riverside rallied back with a run of its own to tie it at 20. The Mustangs then scored three straight points to take a 23-20 lead. The Highlanders were able to cut the lead to one at 24-23, but a Torrey Van Winden kill finished off the set for Cal Poly 25-23. The Mustangs were able to hold the Highlanders to a .087 hitting percentage in the set despite hitting .211 themselves.

Cal Poly opened the second set by scoring the set's first four points, forcing UC Riverside to call timeout. The Mustangs eventually extended the lead to 13-3 thanks in part to strong defense and blocks at the net. They stayed hot from there, getting out to as much as a 24-10 lead. A kill from Jessica McRoskey sealed the set for the Mustangs 25-11. In the second set, Cal Poly out hit the Highlanders .333-.000 and finished the set with five blocks.

The third set was close early on. Up 12-9, Cal Poly used a strong offensive attack to go on a 7-2 run and take a 19-11 lead. They did not look back from there, finishing the set on a 6-3 run to win the set 25-14 and complete the sweep. The Mustangs .419 for the set, the highest of any of the three sets.

For the match, Cal Poly hit .313 and sided-out 74% of the time.

The Mustangs return home for the first of their four-match home stand on Friday, September 28 at 7 p.m against CSUN.
