Van Winden, DeNecochea Take Home Big West Weekly Awards

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After helping lead the Cal Poly volleyball team to a 3-1 win over Hawai'i Saturday for its 15th straight win, 17th consecutive home win and 23rd Big West win in a row, junior outside hitter Torrey Van Winden was named Big West Player of the Week and freshman setter Avalon DeNecochea was named Big West Freshman of the Week.

Van Winden earned her third Player of the Week honor of the season (the fifth of her career) after posting a season-high 29 kills in the four-set win in front of a sold out Mott Athletics Center. She hit .344, committing just seven errors in 64 attempts. She also recorded 14 digs for her sixth double-double of the season while also contributing four block assists.

On the season, she leads the Big West in hitting percentage (.369) and is tied for second in kills with 5.07 per set.

DeNecochea collected her second Freshman of the Week award of the season after directing the Mustangs offensive to a .257 hitting percentage for the match. She currently is second in the Big West in assists with a 10.07 assists per set average.

After beating Hawai'i for the third consecutive meeting going back to last season, the first time that has happened in program history, the Mustangs (16-1, 6-0 BWC) moved up one spot in the AVCA Top 25 rankings to No. 12. They wrap up their four-match home stand this Friday for a Blue-Green rivalry match against UC Santa Barbara at 7 p.m.
