Cal Poly Cross Country Heads to UCSB for Lagoon Invitational Saturday

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Looking to build upon its season-opening team wins in Orange County earlier this month, the Cal Poly cross country program will step back onto the course this weekend, as the Mustangs compete at UC Santa Barbara's annual Lagoon Invitational on Saturday.

Action will start with an alumni & community (open) 5k for registrants at 9:30 a.m., before the collegiate portion of the meet gets underway at 10:15 a.m. behind the UCEN building on campus with the men's 8k, followed by the women's 5k scheduled for 11 a.m.

Typically, the Gaucho home meet marks the start of the season, but this year was pushed back to Sept. 15 due to Cal State Fullerton's Mark Covert Classic serving as a course preview for the Big West Championships (set to be hosted at the same site, Carbon Canyon Park in Brea) on Oct. 27.

As opposed to a head-to-head Blue-Green Rivalry dual format as seen often in years past, this fall's Lagoon event will also be attended by fellow Big West foe Fullerton.

Seniors Peter Cotsirilos, Mikey Giguere, Logan Marshall and Sean McDermott are entered for the Mustang men's squad, back-to-back defending conference champions, alongside juniors Evan Jameson and Alex Merder, sophomores Jake Ritter and Justin Robison, and redshirt freshmen Luis Armendariz, Cameron Botten, Ethan Duffy and Benjamin Holland.

The Cal Poly men, ranked No. 10 regionally in the latest USTFCCCA Poll, won the Covert Classic with 60 points, led by Ritter with a fourth-place time of 24:51.4.

Seniors Hannah Hull and Maddie McDonald, juniors Peyton Bilo, Delaney Fitzsimmons and Katie Izzo, sophomores Rachel Bordes, Abbey Fisk, Melodie Leroudier, Annie Meeder and Chase Worthen, redshirt freshman Mikaela Romanini and true freshman Lexi Watkins will represent the Mustang women's squad, which entered the regional poll at No. 13 this week.

Cal Poly won the Covert Classic with a score of 56, paced by Miranda Daschian's medalist performance of 17:45.7.

Course Maps

UCSB's course is made up of one main 2-mile loop around the lagoon along with a short loop around the neighboring parking lot and The Club & Guest House adjacent to the lawn beside the lagoon. The 5k runs through the main loop once, while the 8k crosses through it twice.

Visiting fans are advised to park in Lot 8 by the campus library, or Lots 5 & 8 by the intersection of Channel Islands/Lagoon Road, for $5.
