Mustangs Travel to Wisconsin Pre-Nationals, Bronco Invitational

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Two weeks out from the Big West Conference Championships, Cal Poly will compete at two cross country meets on Saturday: the Wisconsin Pre-Nationals in Madison and the Bronco Invitational hosted by Santa Clara.

In Wisconsin, action will start with the women's 6k at 10:45 a.m. Central Time, followed by the men's 8k at 11:30 a.m. CDT.

The Badgers' Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course will also serve as the host site of this year's NCAA Championships on Nov. 17.

Mikey Giguere, Benjamin Holland, Evan Jameson, Logan Marshall, Alex Merder, Jake Ritter and Justin Robison are entered for the men's team in Madison, while Peyton Bilo, Sierra Brill, Miranda Daschian, Abbey Fisk, Katie Izzo, Maddie McDonald and Annie Meeder represent the women's team.

Zimmer Course, which opened in 2009, features an exterior loop of 2,500 kilometers and an interior loop of 1,000. Both cover rolling hills and valleys, while the outside loop also runs through a section of dense woods.

Meanwhile Baylands Park in Sunnyvale will host Santa Clara's meet, just under 10 miles northwest of the SCU campus.

Cameron Botten, Peter Cotsirilos, Ethan Duffy and Sean McDermott are scheduled to compete in the Bronco 8k at 8:45 a.m., before Rachel Bordes, Delaney Fitzsimmons, Hannah Hull and Sydnie Rivas run in the 6k, at 9:30.

Baylands, known as a generally flat, fast course, consists of low-cut grass and hard-packed dirt paths with a few short paved sections.

Cal Poly has collected a trio of Big West Athlete of the Week awards this season, as Daschian won the honor on both Sept. 4 & Oct. 2, and Robison also earned the accolade to start this month.

Ritter led the men's squad at each of the first two meets of the season, and Fisk also posted a team-high finish at UCSB on Sept. 15.

Both Mustang squads are ranked regionally, with the men at No. 10 alongside the Pac-12, WCC, Mountain West, Big Sky and WAC, and the women up to No. 8 in the poll. Most teams ranked in the National Top 25 will be in attendance at Wisconsin, while several ranked programs from around the western region will also simultaneously compete at Santa Clara.
