Daschian, Izzo Advance to NCAA Championships for Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly's Miranda Daschian and Katie Izzo were selected for the NCAA Cross Country Championships on Saturday, as the Mustang juniors will compete at the national finals in Wisconsin on Nov. 17.

The 2018 field was announced on the NCAA XC Selection Show following each of the nine regional meets around the country.

The women's 6k will be held at 10:45 a.m. CST Saturday (8:45 in the morning West Coast time) at Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course in Madison.

The Badgers will host the 81st annual championships for the first occasion since 1978, with FloTrack broadcasting live. Top 40 finishers will be All-Americans.

Daschian and Izzo are among 38 individual qualifiers, and two of four from the West Region — joined by Arizona's Addi Zerrenner and UCLA's Erika Adler.

This will actually be the second time this fall that the duo has run on the Madison course, as the Mustangs previously got a look at the terrain for the Pre-Nationals Invite back on Oct. 13 to wrap up the regular season before leading Cal Poly to its third conference title in four years.

Izzo, a Business major from Seal Beach, Calif., took 50th place at Pre-Nats with a time of 21:13.3, while Daschian, a Psychology major from Atascadero, placed 61st in 21:24.1.

Both Mustangs qualified thanks to top-25 performances Friday at the NCAA Regional Championships in Sacramento. Daschian, the 2018 Big West Athlete of the Year, was 18th in 20:10.3 before Izzo took 22nd at 20:14.5.

Daschian and Izzo will start out assigned to Starting Box 31 — alongside Clemson sophomore Logan Morris and Yale senior Andrea Masterson.

Forecasts for Saturday morning predict 31-degree temperatures at the start of the meet, under cloudy skies, with snow on the ground from the night before.

The qualifying of Daschian and Izzo marks the 19th season since the fall of 1995 that the program has been represented at NCAAs.
