SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Elise Krieghoff scored two second-half goals to help lead the Cal Poly women's soccer team to a 2-0 win over Long Beach State in front of a crowd of 760 at Alex G. Spanos Stadium on Friday night in the Big West Conference opener for both teams.
Krieghoff, a sophomore forward, upped her season goal total to 13 through 11 matches. She's now just two shy of the all-time single-season program record (15), set by Kolleen Kassis in 1992. Krieghoff came into the week tied for fourth in the nation in goals-per-match average.
After a scoreless first half, her first score came in the 56th minute after a pass ahead from junior defender Allie Begin. Following a misplay in the back line, Krieghoff took possession and fired a left-footer into the back of the net.
Only a little more than a minute-and-a-half later, junior midfielder Sara Lancaster passed from the right side of the pitch into the middle of the field to set up Krieghoff, who struck from nearly 15 yards out with a right-footed tap to notch the brace.
The Mustangs (5-6-0, 1-0-0 Big West) nearly tallied the game-winner about 45 seconds before halftime, when a shot by junior midfielder Cynthia Garcia hit the post.
Freshman midfielder Lydia Anderson also placed a shot on target for the Mustangs in the win.
Sophomore goalkeeper Alyssa Giannetti made four saves for Cal Poly. The second-year starter came into the game ranked third in the Big West in saves for the season (46).
Long Beach State (6-5-0, 0-1-0 Big West) defeated two Top 25 teams during its non-conference slate, collecting victories over No. 14 Texas Tech and No. 22 BYU. The 49ers, the fourth 2012 NCAA Tournament team the Mustangs have faced so far this season, received two votes in this week's NSCAA/Continental Tire Top 25 coaches poll.
Friday's match was the first in San Luis Obispo since Sept. 6 for the Mustangs, who improved their record to 4-0-0 at home this season.
Cal Poly now has an active six-match home unbeaten streak (5-0-1) versus Big West opponents dating back to last season.
The Mustangs will finish off the two-match conference-opening home stand by hosting UC Irvine (5-5-0, 0-1-0 Big West) at noon Sunday in Alex G. Spanos Stadium. The Anteaters fell at UC Santa Barbara on Friday night, 1-0.
